     When scientists lie...

Although many may not know or be aware of the social phenomenon, being a scientist today is to maintain a sacred position analogous perhaps to that of the bishop in medieval times; scientists are new apostles of truth in the modern world.  What they claim tends to be accepted as the basis of public belief and social action in our era, which confers upon the person who practices such a charge a recognition of the highest honor.

Therefore, when a scientists lies to the public and purposefully distorts the scientific truth, either when speaking to the press or under oath in a court of law, he violates his vocational pledge and, perhaps without being aware of it, does a great deal of damage to the communities and societies to whom he belongs.  When a scientist lies, he commits a sin as grave and severe as the greatest medieval blasphemy, and perhaps deserves the same punishment that was the adjudicated.

It is extremely worrisome when biologists of the highest professional ranks, as indicated by their doctoral toga, testify in favor of projects whose environmental impact will be extremely negative in the long run.   Without realizing it, while they are using their title to render prestige upon projects that do not deserve them, they destroy their basis of social legitimacy.  Those scientists of subsequent generations, trying to mend error, will not be able to as a result.  Anyone who has studied the history of science knows how difficult it was to obtain this social trust.

On the other hand, we cannot doubt that the position of a scientist today is a very difficult one.  In contrast to the physician, whom after long years of study will have a relatively guaranteed income, the scientist enters upon society after an arduous academic phase with few job guarantees.  After all, within the capitalist system we live under, if the scientist does not achieve a university position, he or she will inevitably be forced to enter private industry which, in a majority of cases, will seek to use this knowledge to generate some type of income.  Although gain and profit is not in and of itself a sin, its use to destroy the ecosystems of the creatures studied by that scientist is one of the most profound intellectual ethical violations that exist.  The emergent tendency, as demonstrated by Genetech who patent clusters of genes and proteins, is gravely alarming.

Upon not having job guarantees, the scientist of high prestige who finds himself in a position of economic difficulty will be tempted to exchange the value implicit in his word for monetary value--to obtain an economic benefit in exchange for lying, and in the process, violating the implicit pledges of his vocation.  The greater the economic weakness relatives to the scientists social influence and importance, the greater the temptation to go to 'the dark side'.  This can happen to a marine biologists who out of great social and financial ambitions, or the the chemist who having thirteen mouths to feed (kids) does not have the means in fulfilling this parental duties.  Similarly, the likelihood of undue-influence occurs when there exist great industries with high incomes and who are the only source of professional income available in the region.  Entering a career in search of the truth, the scientist finds himself becoming the 'tool of the Devil'.

As a result, in order to prevent scientists from lying, the state (in this case the government of Puerto RIco) should provide a guarantee to each person accepted into a doctoral Ph.D. program work for a previously defined limited amount of time.  By this mechanism, the person who enters a scientific career will know that their hard and difficult investment in time and money will not be wasted, and they will not find themselves tempted towards uncouth actions that, in the end, will only hurt the natural world they study.

By not confronting this issue, we will see ourselves in a situation in which the intellectual basis of our collectivity have fallen under, bringing with them the rest of us.  The well-being of the scientist is intimately tied to the survival of our modern collectivity.
