History of Universities: Volume XXXIV/1
A Global History of Research Education: Disciplines, Institutions, and Nations, 1840-1950 · Volume 34
by Alan Rocke and Ku-Ming Chang
2021
Oxford University Press

This volume compares the training of scholars in different disciplines and countries across the globe in a century that laid the foundation for modern academia. The articles in this volume examine the different training "instruments" and methods for text-based disciplines (history and philology), laboratory sciences (such as chemistry), theoretical sciences (mathematics, for instance), fieldwork disciplines (linguistics and paleontology), and clinical science (medicine). They consider countries or societies in Europe, North America, South and East Asia, and Latin America, and analyze the roles of the state, nationalism and internationalism that shaped the institutions and policies for research education. Some of these articles are comparative, while the others are in-depth case studies of individual disciplines in specific countries at different stages of scientific developments. The introduction and conclusion of this volume bring together the important themes that run across the article and make necessary supplements to present a synthetic picture of the global history of research education.

La invención de la ciencia en América. Propaganda científica en la novela histórica colombiana
By Jorge Manuel Escobar Ortiz · 2022

A Portrait of Assisted Reproduction in Mexico
Scientific, Political, and Cultural Interactions
By Sandra P. González-Santos · 2020
Springer International Publishing

This book paints a comprehensive portrait of Mexico’s system of assisted reproduction first from a historical perspective, then from a more contemporary viewpoint. Based on a detailed analysis of books and articles published between the 1950s and 1980s, the first section tells the story of how the epistemic, normative, and material infrastructure of the assisted reproduction system was built. It traces the professionalization process of assisted reproduction as a medical field and the establishment of its professional association. Drawing on ethnographic material, the second part looks at how this system developed and flourished from the 1980s up to 2010, its commercialization process, how the expansion of reproductive services took place, and the messages regarding reproductive technologies that circulated within a wide discursive landscape. Given its scope and methods, this book will appeal to scholars interested in science and technology studies, reproduction studies, history of medicine, medical anthropology, and sociology.

Jayme Tiomno: A Life for Science, a Life for Brazil
By William Dean Brewer, Alfredo Tiomno Tolmasquim · 2021
Springer International Publishing

Jayme Tiomno (1920-2011) was one of the most influential Brazilian physicists of the 20th century, interacting with many of the renowned physicists of his time, including John Wheeler and Richard Feynman, Eugene Wigner, Chen Ning Yang, David Bohm, Murray Gell-Mann, Remo Ruffini, Abdus Salam, and many others.

This biography tells the sometimes romantic, often discouraging but finally optimistic story of a dedicated scientist and educator from a developing country who made important contributions to particle physics, gravitation, cosmology and field theory, and to the advancement of science and of scientific education, in many institutions in Brazil and elsewhere. Drawing on unpublished documents from archives in Brazil and the US as well as private sources, the book traces Tiomno's long life, following his role in the establishment of various research facilities and his tribulations during the Brazilian military dictatorship. It presents a story of progress and setbacks in advancing science in Brazil and beyond, and of the persistence and dedication of a talented physicist who spent his life in search of scientific truth.

By ROSA ANDREA LOPES DE SOUZA

The technological environments we inhabit require continual repair and maintenance in order to function. Yet the people on whom such repairs rely—along with their knowledge and labor—too often remain unseen and undervalued, becoming visible only in cases of infrastructural breakdown or spectacular disaster. The routine invisibility of repair facilitates grand proclamations of technological solutionism, distracting from the requirements for living equitably in an increasingly fragmented and fragile world. How, then, does our understanding of the history of technology change when we center repair and maintenance? We will explore this and related questions at the first joint meeting between ICOHTEC and SHOT in three decades.
Conference information

This bilingual (English – Spanish) conference will take place in Viña del Mar, Chile from 9 to 14 July 2024.
The conference will include hybrid participation options for both panelists and audiences. There will be two meeting rooms that will be streamed live.

Emilia Jarochowska joined Twitter in 2016 in the hope that it might help to enhance her career. She was finishing her PhD in palaeontology at the time, and felt that the platform would help her to connect with colleagues and find job opportunities. But that was, she says, before the platform became a “sea of bad trolls”.

Last December, after much consideration and several experiences of fighting misinformation on climate change and COVID-19, Jarochowska closed her account, feeling that her reputation could be at risk if she kept using the platform. She felt that Twitter was promoting provocative discourse over facts and encouraging a type of controversy that “is not what scientists should be associated with”, she says.

A survey conducted by Nature suggests that Jarochowska, now at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, is far from alone in curtailing her use of the platform. Since entrepreneur Elon Musk took control in October 2022, he has made a series of largely unpopular changes to Twitter, including cutting down on content moderation; ditching its ‘blue-check’ verification system in favour of one that grants paying members additional clout and privileges; charging money for access to data for research; limiting the number of tweets users can see; and abruptly changing the platform’s name and familiar logo to simply ‘X’. His management has left scientists reconsidering the value of X, and many seem to be leaving.

The British Society for the History of Science (BSHS) has unveiled the shortlist for its Hughes Prize.

Six exceptional books will now be read by judges before the winner is revealed later this year.

The shortlisted works include a history of menthol cigarettes as a means of revealing networks of corporate exploitation and racial capitalism in the twentieth-century United States; a global history of science that challenges longstanding Eurocentric narratives; and a study of American psychiatry ranging broadly across questions of expertise, institutions, and therapy from the field’s inception to the present day.

Three of the books examine narratives of British history, with an account of how and why Victorians re-imagined their future in scientific and technological terms; a study of the role played by Georgian gardens in advancing science, education, and agricultural experimentation; and a biography that places the Huxley family at the centre of debates over humanity’s place in nature.

Alexander von Humboldt was a geographer, explorer and naturalist. Some consider him to be the first ecologist. He altered the way that scientists see the natural world by finding interconnections. He was ahead of the curve on understanding environmental problems such as deforestation and its effect on climate. He was a key influence on Charles Darwin and his modern thinking of evolutionary biology.

Humboldt and Darwin had the ability to evaluate the bigger picture of the world and grasp global interactions and patterns. Their novel perspective on nature enabled both scientists to understand it in a new, complex way: Humboldt concentrated on the detailed description of natural systems and their ecology, while Darwin formulated modern evolutionary theory.

This tour will follow part of Humboldt’s 1802 exploration of Latin America and offers an amazing opportunity to combine two of Ecuador’s most fascinating natural destinations – the biodiverse wonders of the Amazon and the Pacific cloudforests to the west of Quito – and to travel through what Humboldt dubbed the "Avenue of the Volcanoes". Visit a long section of the Pan-American highway where the Andes meets the equator, and where beautiful vistas of snow-capped volcanoes, crystal clear lagoons and lush green valleys can be enjoyed in abundance.

Science and Catholicism in Argentina (1750–1960)
A Study on Scientific Culture, Religion, and Secularisation in Latin America
Miguel de Asúa
De Gruyter, 2022

Science and Catholicism in Argentina (1750–1960) is the first comprehensive study on the relationship between science and religion in a Spanish-speaking country with a Catholic majority and a "Latin" pattern of secularisation.

The text takes the reader from Jesuit missionary science in colonial times, through the conflict-ridden 19th century, to the Catholic revival of the 1930s in Argentina. The diverse interactions between science and religion revealed in this analysis can be organised in terms of their dynamic of secularisation. The indissoluble identification of science and the secular, which operated at rhetorical and institutional levels among the liberal elite and the socialists in the 19th century, lost part of its force with the emergence of Catholic scientists in the course of the 20th century.

In agreement with current views that deny science the role as the driving force of secularisation, this historical study concludes that it was the process of secularisation that shaped the interplay between religion and science, not the other way around.

The Religion of Life: Eugenics, Race, and Catholicism in Chile
Sarah Walsh
University of Pittsburgh Press, 2022

The Religion of Life examines the interconnections and relationship between Catholicism and eugenics in early twentieth-century Chile. Specifically, it demonstrates that the popularity of eugenic science was not diminished by the influence of Catholicism there. In fact, both eugenics and Catholicism worked together to construct the concept of a unique Chilean race, la raza chilena. A major factor that facilitated this conceptual overlap was a generalized belief among historical actors that male and female gender roles were biologically determined and therefore essential to a functioning society. As the first English-language study of eugenics in Chile, The Religion of Life surveys a wide variety of different materials (periodicals, newspapers, medical theses, and monographs) produced by Catholic and secular intellectuals from the first half of the twentieth century. What emerges from this examination is not only a more complex rendering of the relationship between religion and science but also the development of White supremacist logics in a Latin American context.

In a world where the delicate balance of nature is threatened by human activities, a group of American scientists has taken on an extraordinary mission. Hidden away within the walls of San Diego Zoo’s “frozen zoo”, a remarkable collection is being safeguarded, containing a vast array of living cells from endangered and extinct species. Established in 1975, this visionary project was conceived by Dr. Kurt Benirschke, who recognized the urgency of preserving these animals' genetic materials for future generations.

Now, under the expertise of Marlys Houck and Barbara Durrant, the frozen zoo has become the largest and most diverse collection of its kind, housing over 10,000 individuals and nearly 1200 species and subspecies. Through the power of freezing cells at bone-chilling temperatures, these scientists are holding these cells in suspended animation, their vitality waiting patiently to contribute to a groundbreaking solution - bringing species back from the brink of extinction.
