¡Viva el Zotero !
Si usted es un humanista académico, uno de los asuntos más tediosos es el tiempo que uno le dedica a las citas: la necesidad de obtener, seguir, almacenar y muchas veces tener que reescribir el nombre de libros, artículos y otras fuentes que fueron utilizadas par un proyecto particular de investigación. La cantidad de tiempo dedicado a este importante pero secundario elemento es tiempo no dedicado a la investigación--un problema que era peor aun en la época antes de las computadoras. Hoy día uno, por ejemplo, probablemente iría al catalogo de la universidad, identificaría los textos relevantes y copiaría esta información a un documento digital. Estas citas raramente estaban en un formato adecuado, que significaba que al escribir el libro o el ensayo, uno tenia que tomar bastante tiempo recopilando y reformateando la información de las citas. Mientras mas larga y exhaustiva la investigación, mas tiempo tenia que tomar uno arreglando la bibliografía o las citas al calce.
He aquí donde esta la belleza de Zotero.
Zotero, un programa independiente desde 2011, es quizás uno de los mejores programas académicos que he visto en mucho tiempo. Le permite al investigador, con solamente apretar un 'botón', obtener TODAS las entradas que podrían haber sido generados por una particular búsqueda en una base de datos, tal como la Biblioteca del Congreso (EU) o JSTOR. El programa permite que toda la información revelaste sea incorporada en su propia base de datos en su formato apropiado para uso futuro. Estas citas luego pueden ser organizadas y ubicadas en particulares 'sobres' dentro del programa, aunque también utiliza 'claves inteligentes' al igual que tener un buen motor de búsqueda. Cuando usted este escribiendo, lo único que tiene que hacer es seleccionar la entrada y moverla al lugar en el texto donde quiere que aparezca y el programa hará una copia inteligente al lugar en su formato apropiado. Wow.
Aunque el programa podría ser mejorado, tal como permitirle al investigado importar las entradas a un sobre o categoría particular, no hay duda alguna que Zotero es un programa que revolucionara la manera en que académicos humanistas trabajan--permitiendo el ahorro de miles de horas malgastadas en tareas que francamente eran secundarias a su propósito principal. If you are a humanist scholar, one of the biggest 'pains' is the time taken up by citations: the need to obtain, track, store, and often retype the names of books, articles, and other sources that have been used for a particular research project. The time spent on this important but minor endeavor is often time that is not spent on research--a problem that was probably worse prior to the computer era. One might now days, for example, go to the university library catalog, identify relevant books, and copy-paste these onto a file. These citations were rarely in their adequate format, which meant that when writing the paper or book, one had to spend much time recopying and reformatting text. The longer and more thorough the research, the longer amount of time spent fixing the bibliography or the footnotes.
Herein the beauty of Zotero.
Zotero, a stand-alone program since 2011, is perhaps one of the best academic utilities I have seen in a very long time. It allows the researcher, with the click of a button, to obtain ALL of the entries that might have been produced by a particular database search, say the Library of Congress or JSTOR. The program obtains all of the relevant information and correctly includes it in its database. These can then be sorted and placed into particular folder for later use, though the program has a 'smart keyword', as well as a very good search engine. When you are writing, all you need to do is 'drag-drop' the entry into the text document, and the program will actually do a 'smart copy-paste' with the appropriate format!! Wow.
While the program could be 'improved', such as allowing the researcher to import the entries into a particular folder, there can be no doubt that Zotero is a program that will revolutionize the way scholars work--allowing them to save countless hours on tasks which were inherently secondary to their main focus.
