Environmentalism as the latest political fad

As we approach the upcoming elections in 2008, each candidate is now proclaiming himself to be leader of environmental reform, from Anibal Acevedo Vila (PPD) to Kenneth McClintock (PNP).  It is part of a larger pattern seen in the United States with the monumental success of "An Inconvenient Truth", a documentary by the ex-Vice President Al Gore.  In fact, it is somewhat surprising when individuals who had never expressed a worry about the environment suddenly begin taking actual measures to offer their own small contribution.  Far from 'criticizing' such acts, we certainly support these.  Nonetheless, there arises the question of how long this latest political fashion will remain. Will it turn into genuine changes in our daily living, or will it just become a mere jest where we affirm things we know we will never comply with?  The mist important question we need to ask our politicians of today is whether the environmental policies established in the present will be retained as active public policy tomorrow, during the next 3, 10, 50, 100 years.  It is very easy to be the leader of a mass movement with popular support, rather than the sole dissident voice of  conscience pointing dangers to come.
