On the importance of being orderly

Too many in Puerto Rico take planification too casually; after all, some argue, "if the island has managed relatively well without it for so long, why bother?"  Perhaps Norbert Weiner, the founder of cybernetics, said it best some 50 years ago. “Progress imposes not only new possibilities for the future but new restrictions.”   Humanity's contemporary power, modern technology, means that we cannot be ruled by sheer impulse or desire.  As the most recent issue of Scientific American explores, the next 50 years will be crucial for our future.  The increasing population will have an exponential impact that needs to be controlled to some degree or other.  If we do not plan, we may all end up in the dumpster.
