From atop the rim of a volcano in the heart of San Salvador on Friday, 10 Grand Junction residents had the unique opportunity to discuss geology, energy production, and politics while peering down at the cinder cone of the Boquerón crater, which last erupted in 1917.

The group is in El Salvador wrapping up a week-long Colorado Mesa University (CMU) summer Political Science course, led by Dr. Holly Oberle of CMU and Anna Stout, Founder of the Foundation for Cultural Exchange (FCE) and current city council member. The FCE facilitates the sister city relationship and is coordinating the logistics of the delegation.

The trip was planned to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Grand Junction’s sister city relationship with the rural community of El Espino, which began in 2004 following a Mesa State College Sociology class.

In addition to Dr. Oberle, CMU professors Drs Tim Casey (Political Science) and Javier Tellez (Geology), are accompanying the group, which includes five CMU students and City of Grand Junction Director of Communications Sara Spaulding.
