Mexico’s new president just gave science a big promotion
Source: Science
MEXICO CITY—Mexico’s main science funding agency is getting a hefty promotion. President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo last week announced the nation’s science council will be elevated to a “secretariat,” the highest level of the government’s bureaucratic pecking order.
Sheinbaum Pardo also chose a leader for the new Secretariat of Science, Humanities, Technology and Innovation: evolutionary biologist Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez, a longtime adviser and ally.
Many Mexican researchers are applauding the moves, saying they help allay fears about Sheinbaum Pardo’s approach to science. “This is an unprecedented, historic decision,” says Edgar Guerra, a sociologist at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes. “Science will have a status it should have had long ago.”
